My whole30 – almost!

So First off, I am attempted a whole30 with a few modifications. I’ll explain more. I kind of decided last minute and jumped in real quick. As in did some research for a few days and then just started!

I started on February 18th ‘officially’ I guess you would say.
Background – My second pregnancy was hard. I carried Teddy much higher and it really affected my body. It affected what and how much I could eat significantly. So much that I even got gall bladder scans because they thought I maybe had stone or an issue. I was GBS positive, so in the hospital I had antibiotics. A lot of them since I was there for about 24 hours before T was born.  After the delivery and I started to get back to normal I noticed I was having a lot of digestive issues. I did some research and asked around to some friends and my good friend B, really encouraged just doing a whole30 to see. I pretty much figured why not? Also, we have had issues with Teddy being pretty sensitive to dairy and some constipation, so the hope is that this helps him too!
The modified part: I am nursing – I have a 3 month old baby. Yes I know you can do whole30 while nursing and all that jazz. My ‘modification’ is that I’m not stressing some of the small details. Such as – I know the ketchup we have has sugar in it. I’m not tossing it (brand new) – I’m just using as little as possible and very sparingly. Same with BBQ sauce. Same with Bacon( which why is there sugar?!) but not all our stores have sugar free bacon and with 2 littles I can’t trapeze all over the city to find it! I also had a lot of snacks- nuts raisins and Larabars. I know the type of person I am and stressing over a few extra small details is not good for me. I am also continuing to use my BCAAs as I don’t really drink coffee and they have a tiny bit of sweetener. You can hate on me all you want, because it’s not 100%. I’m trying for 100% but in reality I know that I’ll hit 98% and that’s OK with me!
The first few days were not bad. I definitely had a huge sugar withdrawal headache! I had prepped pretty well food and snacks and wasn’t too hungry. I made a meal plan and did costco and trader joes and sprouts shopping. It was funny the night hubby saw me eating a burger in lettuce. I didn’t really tell him much and just sprung it on him as well. He pretty much eats what I set out and I know what he likes in general. My friend B has been an awesome text support friend! She has suggested meals and altering my food here and there.
After the first week, my women’s bible study group started a challenge for a month of no grains or sugar. I’m doing no dairy and being a lot more strict, but its wonderful to have the support! We have shared a lot of recipes and stuff so far!
I’ll recap my food up to this point –
Breakfast :
Roasted sweet potatoes, 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon. Also I usually eat a banana and spoonful of almond butter. And a lot of water!
Usually I have some chicken with guacamole, tomatoes, olives, maybe some green soup. Then either just mixed berries or some berries in coconut yogurt.
Varies. We have done simple chicken sausage and zoodles, burgers, grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, more eggs and hash browns. Then we have done more complicated chicken and meatloaf.
So how am I feeling? Well the first two weeks or so were and adjustment on the system. It was up and down. I am feeling a lot better these days. I feel clearer and have more energy – as much as I can get when you still are up in the night! The next 2 weeks were kind of like cruising. It got a little boring but I hung in there. The 5th week was probably the hardest because I was bored with food and didn’t meal prep as much.
As for my digestive issues. I feel a lot better and have had fewer issues. I’m still having a few things here and there but they mostly happened when I cheated. I am also taking some probiotics and hopefully they are helping. I have learned I am pretty sensitive to foods cooked in a lot of oil.
Teddy is doing well with no dairy. I accidentally had something with dairy in it and it was pretty clear it didn’t sit well with him! He had a lot of gas and constipation.
I mentioned this above but I did have a few cheats. I had a couple cupcakes and we ate Thai food I think twice. Once was when I broke my toe and couldn’t cook. I enjoyed my treats but they did affect me. I didn’t feel great the next day and ended up with some uncomfortable gas. So In reality this wasn’t a REAL whole30. I feel like I came close. Maybe in a few months I’ll try for more, but for the time being I’m more than ok with the changes I made.
I know it’s not the main point or even a goal of whole30 but weight loss can happen. Over the 5 weeks I lost 7 pounds. I didn’t measure but I can now fit into the next size down of pants I couldn’t fit into before.
What’s next? Well I think since its working and I feel pretty well I’m going to keep up for the most part. I may try to reintroduce a few items such as peanut butter and see. The ladies in our church group want to continue the paleo challenge as well so I’m keeping accountable with them! I love having others on the journey with me!
Have you tried a whole30?

How was your week?

Move It Monday

It has been awhile again. Honestly I have been working on posts, but I am just slacking on getting them up! I’m going to make a goal to post our weekly meals and my exercise plan every Monday.

I’m joining Emily at Our Knight Life for these weekly posts! We are keeping each other accountable!

I have been doing a whole30 and paleo eating lately and I have a whole other post with the details but it requires Planning. I really am enjoying planning meals for the whole week and have enjoyed cooking some new stuff! Not all of it has been winners though! I also re-joined the gym and have been working out. I got slowed down by a toe break last week, but rest assured I am trying to get it going as much as I can!

Workouts this week:

  • Back and Biceps with recumbent bike
  • swimming 30 mins
  • Chest/triceps/shoulders with recumbent bike
  • I am currently wearing a boot so I’m a little nervous to do any leg weights, so I’m just focusing on upper body and also doing some HIIT on the bike. I usually warm up and then do 10-20 mins of 30-45s sprint with about 1 minute recovery. It is a real workout!

Meals this week:

  • Monday: Cracklin’ Chicken (nomnompaleo here) with roasted carrots and spinach
  • Tuesday: Sweet potato Turkey chili (recipe) with green beans
  • Wednesday: meatloaf and roasted potatoes
  • Thursday: Grilled chicken and probably green beans
  • Friday: Burgers and sweet potato fries

Weigh in:

-1.4 pounds

I weigh in on Saturday mornings at the gym.

What are you favorite paleo eats?

The Big Move

So if you follow my Instagram or even my facebook, you may have noticed that the scenery changed last year!

This all started last (2013) Christmas when hubby was toying with the idea of applying for some other jobs. We prayed a lot about it and just decided that God would work it out if it was meant to be. No harm in applying. Well we knew one company would bite. And they did. He had an interview that went really well and then the offers. Well… that was another trying time. The new job was in a much more expensive place to live – Los Angeles- a place we were not thrilled with moving and so the money was going to be an issue. We calculated all the details and ended up doing a fair amount of negotiating and actually thought it wasn’t going to happen for a few weeks. Then one night we got a call with what we had needed. It was kind of a shock because all of this was partially on a whim, but also serious! Once we accepted the position, things ended up moving really fast. We moved in about 3 weeks!!
Thankfully I had some amazing friends who came over and helped me pack and get rid of extra items. We had movers, but they were only to pack ‘breakable’ items. SOOO that means we had to pack the rest. It seemed intimidating at first, but one of my dear friends helped me go through room by room packing. In the process, we discovered that Hannah is deathly afraid of the noise packing tape makes!! She screamed like crazy!!
We had movers come the first week in April. Here is proof:
Oh yes and should I mention they took FOREVER. There were 4 guys. We had a 3 bedroom townhouse but really only about 2 bedrooms worth of ‘stuff’ you could say. It took them half the day to pack the fragile stuff and then close to 8 hours to load the truck! I was floored at how slow it was. When we moved to Seattle 5 years prior it was about 3x faster. Also having a 9 month old baby with strangers in your house packing everything is NOT easy. Thankfully my good friend who lived 5 mins away came and got her and took her for the afternoon. She was able to nap there and it allowed us to finish the packing AND as they emptied rooms, I cleaned each room so it was done by the time THEY were done.
We stayed that night in a hotel and then had a flight the next afternoon to LAX! I got to have coffee in the morning with a friend and then we had arranged for our cars to get picked up with a hauler and we headed out! We had quite a bit of luggage, but were allowed to pack some items in the cars which helped a TON!!!
My last picture of Seattle as we were leaving:
It really was bitter sweet. I definitely cried. We were there for 5 years. It may not seem like a lot, but when you consider 4 years of college then 2 years of grad school then another 1.5 years of work all in different places, this was the longest we had lived in a place in quite awhile! We made some amazing friends.
And here we are being ‘Welcomed’ to Los Angeles:
I also took these two pictures. Our last Seattle set and first one in Los Angeles.  It reminded me that God is still there and his beauty is there no matter where we are.
We did not have time for a house hunting trip or anything, and the company graciously (?) offered temporary housing for us for one month. We had been looking at properties to rent, but when you don’t know the area and things are as big as LA, you don’t sign up in advance! Once we got settled in the temporary housing we hit the ground running trying to find a place to live.  We were told by a few friends things go fast- BOY that is an understatement here! We also found out that finding exactly what you want is not possible so if you find something with 70-80% of what you need, then your best bet is to snatch it up.
We looked for I think 3-4 days and came to an open house. The place was decent enough and had the ONE thing we really needed – washer and dryer hook-ups. The price was more than fair so we ended up signing a lease that day. However, it was still early April and the apartment wasn’t going to be ready until the first of May!! EEK. So that meant the full month in the temporary housing.
We finally got to move in May and boy is it nice to see your stuff again!
And yes in case you are wondering, we happen to live about 5 minutes from here:
Have you ever made a ‘big move’? Share in the comments!

Happy New Year!

I am hoping to get things back up and running here on the blog. I really slacked off when we moved. Of course moving + pregnancy + excuses = no blogging. I am not quite sure where things are going to go from here, but I have a few ideas!
To summarize 2014 was a very blessed year. We were blessed with an adorable son, a great new job, finding a wonderful church family in our new place, lots of new friends, and a lot of amazing memories.
I have not really been into resolutions the last few years. I feel like you just set yourself up for failure. I do have a few Goals for this year. Here there are so you guys can all help keep me accountable!
  • Run. I’m not sure what this all entails, but I want to get back to running. I am not signing up for races or anything but I do want to get back to running. I do really miss it.
  • Lift. I’m starting back at the gym in February I believe and can’t wait to get in there and lift some weights!
  • Finish old craft projects. I have quite a few unfinished or not even started sewing & crochet projects.
  • Blog (obviously)
  • More bible reading and devotions
I figured I would keep it shorter and more broad. I know this may not all happen, but I really feel like I was slacking a lot last year after we moved. I feel like I need to pick myself up and make some action happen on stuff that I have committed to (like the blog and fabric I have purchased for projects and all).
What are your goals for 2015? I’d love to hear in the comments!

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

I made some awesome muffins today and just want to share!!

Here in California, if you blink your bananas will look like this:

We are talking a couple days up to a week if you forget, or get busy, they get covered up.. etc. Its happening WAY too often to me! So I’ve been searching for alternatives to Banana Bread. Not that it’s bad, just looking for something different!

In my Pinterest (follow me here) perusing I found this recipe from Crunchy Creamy Sweet. They looked pretty easy, I had all the ingredients AND it said ‘skinny’. By this I mean no oil and greek yogurt is used instead. I’m always game because I tend to eat more than my fair share!

I whipped these up this morning before it got too warm. A note about hot California – baking has to be restricted to early morning or late evening. :( They were pretty simple and fast. The two substitutions I used were regular whole wheat flour vs white whole wheat and I only had semi-sweet chocolate chips.

I baked for the 5 minutes, then another 13 or so. My toothpick seemed clean, but I think they needed to bake a bit longer. They are not as fluffy as Anna’s and they ‘sank’ as they cooled in the pan for a bit. However that did not alter the taste! Here is the final product:

Even Hannah approved and chowed down on one after her nap! They have a great flavor and I’ll definitely be making some more!!

Update: No Soda September

So I issued this challenge at the beginning of the month:

Did you decide to Join? If so how are you doing?

Have you had ANY soda?

My update – This has been harder and easier than I thought.

As of today – the 15th – NO SODA!! WOO!!

What I am doing to combat the cravings – most water and more water. with LOTS of Ice! I have had a jug of crystal light a couple times just because its been ridiculously hot and the flavoring really helps me drink something. I almost daily have my BCAAs. usually in the afternoons. Yes I have coffee.

So Have I been tempted?! YES! its been so hot that I’m like please I just want a $1 McDonalds coke or the ones from the gas station… AND more than once hubby has brought home a 2L of diet coke. AHHH IN THE HOUSE! Its so hard, but I haven’t had any!! But I’m determined to make it through the end of the month!

How is it going for you? Leave a comment letting me know!
