September Goals + Workout

September! The end of summer and the start of fall and hopefully cooler weather!

After just coming off the August #20x20Challenge and having fun and progress I want to keep up my workouts and try to take the next step.

So here are my September Goals:

  • Complete 16 workouts. Its not 20 but 20 really takes a lot more work and we have a few things starting back up and will make it a little more difficult.  If things work well and I hit 20 then all the better!
  • Better Nutrition. I want to have better planned meals and less eating out. I also need to focus on better lunches as it is my biggest downfall. I would love to see the scale go down but if that doesn’t happen I do want my clothes to be looser!
  • More walking. Walking is so good and I’ve been enjoying some afternoon walks but my real goal is family walks after dinner!
  • Workouts for you!! My goal is to share some of my at home and even at the gym workouts with you!

With all that said I’ll be keeping updates on workouts and nutrition and yummy recipes so stay tuned! I do have today’s workout right here! It was pretty tough and I was sweating!

DONE and DONE.

You guys. This was HUGE. I started off NOT thinking I could hit 20 workouts. I get to go to the gym 2 times a week. This challenge required 5 workouts a week. That meant I had to do 3 AT HOME. I HATE working out at home. Its hot, my kids are running around, and I have plenty of ‘other’ things to do.

So this month I told myself. It’s ONLY 20 minutes. Go sit down and see how long you spend on Facebook the next time you open it for a ‘quick’ check. I bet you its at least 20 minutes! That short time can be used to accomplish a sweat successful workout! I hauled my bike trainer out of the garage and cleaned it up and my bike. I bribed my child to sit while I worked out. I made trips to the gym for awesome ME time. I Planned. I worked hard. I sweated.

Here is a recap of my 20 days of workouts:

Not all of these workouts were from the official Program. I added in a few of my own that fit my schedule.

Results:
Did I lose weight: no. According to the scale my weight is UP.

Did I lose inches: I believe so. Some of my pants & shorts are not as tight.

Muscle Definition: better! I really feel like I can see more definition in my legs and arms!

Up Next:
I have some fitness goals for September and will be sharing some workouts for home & the gym! So check back tomorrow for the first one!

I also want to focus more on nutrition. The only thing I was consistent about was getting my protein in after a workout. My nutrition wasn’t terrible but it was definitely Sub-Par. I know that nutrition is probably 80% of the deal BUT I wanted to focus on one thing at a time. Now that I know I CAN do these workouts, I can focus on the next step.

Protein Mocha Frappe!

Summertime usually calls for cold coffee not hot! I love coffee after a solid workout but I also need to get my protein in for recovery! Therefore I thought I’d combine them!

Protein Mocha Frappe

This is super easy and super yummy! I altered a recipe I got from Kate.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz Coconut milk (or milk of your choice)
  • 2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder (I prefer the dark!)
  • 1/3 c Cold brew coffee (Or 1/2c of regular coffee chilled)
  • 1 scoop protein powder (I use Plant Fusion)
  • Ice to desired thickness

Dump all ingredients in blender and mix it up! The more ice you have the thicker it will be!

A few notes – Cold Brew. We use the Toddy Cold Brew Coffee Maker  to make cold brew. It is very smooth and addicting!

You can use any other protein powders you wish!

-The taste. They are not soapy like a baby wipe, nor are they bland. The sweetness does actually come through! Hannah enjoys getting them out *just* to lick them.

-The size. They are smaller than the wipes we typically use (Huggies), but still plenty large enough to actually wipe both kids up after a meal.

LILLEbaby COMPLETE All-Seasons Review

If you have been following me since Hannah was born you know that I am a big fan of baby wearing. One of the things I definitely wanted when she was born was a baby carrier! I used that carrier a LOT. Hannah was a late walker, and most of the time I was pregnant with Teddy I had to carry her!! She was and still is pretty hesitant about shopping carts.

As time went on I realized there were a lot more options for baby carriers out there! Before I had Teddy, Emily  suggested I try a LILLEbaby. She generously sent us a LILLEbaby to take with us last Christmas to Virginia to visit my family. Teddy was literally 3 weeks old. It was AMAZING. Here is one of the first times I had him in the carrier.

We had gone to Target for a few items and had Teddy in the baby seat. I had Hannah in the carrier when I went into the store. At some point Teddy started flipping out. I switched the kids around and Teddy was back asleep in no time!
We tried out the old style All Seasons on our trip. It was great to keep the panel zipped up for the cold winter air. Upon returning to California, it was a bit warmer and it is so nice to have the option to unzip the panel which reveals a mesh center for more airflow to the baby.
Then I was asked to be a LILLEbaby Ambassador received the newer version of the All Seasons to try. The newer version has 2-way straps under the arms. It is shocking how much of a difference the 2-way straps make! So much easier to adjust! It still has all the other features as before: 6 carrying positions, Lumbar Support, Extendable Panel with the flip up neck support, and the wide straps and waist belt.
One of the most appealing features of the LILLEbaby is that you do not need an infant insert for newborns. If you have ever used an infant insert – you know how much of a pain it can be and how hot it can be. I know that more than once Hannah overheated in the insert we used. In the LILLEbaby, with an infant, you can use the wide seat with a blanket under their bottom to keep the legs in the natural frog-legged position OR you can use the narrow seat and their legs will be still seated ergonomically, but exposed. Teddy preferred the frog-leg position for a long time.  He is 3 months old here in the fetal position in the wide seat.

Eventually when he started wanting to push his legs out, we moved to the narrow seat. This was so handy!!

He was super comfy and loved the freedom of his legs being out!
When Teddy reached 6 months old he finally fit into the wide seat. To ‘fit’ the seat needs to fit baby knee to knee and their feet can swing freely!

Let’s not forget about Hannah. She loves loves to be “UP”! At 2 and about 25 pounds, its not easy to carry her – LILLE to the rescue!

Hannah is here in the Hip Carry. There are 6 total Carrying positions. The last one is the Back Carry. Pretty common and easily a favorite for when I need to “get stuff done”!

For the most part we stick to the face in and back carries. Occasionally we face out for fun activities like baking cookies or birthday parties!

One of the advantages to the LILLEbaby arm straps is that you can switch them up so instead of back pack straps, you can cross the straps to make an X. This distributes the weight more on your back and not as much on your shoulders. It is our preferred carry for any long term wearing.

One of the other features that I love about the LILLEbaby is the flip up neck support. It is very helpful for toddlers who are taller to keep them from straining back too far, but for smaller babies it is great for sleep! It helps block out light and distractions. The other main thing that this neck support allows – NURSING! I have never before been a huge nurse-on-the-go person, but with the neck support and the wider shoulder straps – I can nurse and no one is the wiser!!

I have nursed in the grocery store, on walks, at restaurants, at the zoo, and yes at church! It makes life with a nursing infant SO much easier.

JillFit 20×20 August Challenge

If you have been following me awhile, you know I have been an avid fan of Jill Coleman for quite awhile. I joined her JillFit Lifestylers group before I got pregnant with Hannah. I learned so much about metabolic effect, High intensity training, and just weight lifting in general. It really gave me the added UMPH I needed to top off my running. Since then I’ve stayed in touch with Jill and some of the coaches through other similar programs such as Momsanity.

A couple weeks ago, I saw the email Jill sent out about her August 20×20 challenge. Basically she was offering a free month of workouts for anyone who wants to join in. You have to do 20 – 20 minute workouts in the month of August and at least 12 of them have to be using weights. (You can’t do all cardio HIIT!) My friend B said she was going to sign up and encouraged me to do so. It averages out to needing to workout 5 days a week for the month! That is a lot and more than I have done in a couple years!! However, I figured I could give it my best shot and see! There are prizes if you participate and post on Instagram.

I have been continuing to do 20 minute workouts since getting back after Teddy was born. Who has time for an hour of weight lifting?! Not me. One of the things I am excited for with this challenge was a few new workouts. I have been doing pretty similar workouts the last few months and was in desperate need of mixing it up more! Another thing I am hoping for is just more of a burn overall and some better muscle development from working out more! I am not going to the gym 5 days a week! Let me assure you! I am trying to go about 3 and do 2 workouts from home.

JillFit 20x20 Challenge 2015 Day 1

Day 1: I started off with the Upper Body workout at the gym. I don’t have enough weights or equipment to do this at home. It was good! I was not super sore, so likely I needed to use heavier weights.

Day 2: At Home I was able to do the 5×4 full body workout. I did it during nap time or supposed naptime – both kids pretty much screamed the whole workouts! However I wanted to get it done. 20 minutes is NOT long in the grand scheme of things!

Day 3: I hit the gym again for the squat/lunge madness workout. Let me tell you – that is Madness for sure!! However I seriously love these type of workouts. They really push you! I was quite sore afterwards, but keeping moving definitely helped! (Chasing 2 kids you don’t have time to just sit!!)

Day 4: I hit the gym for a repeat of the Upper Body workouts. This time I tried to go a little heavier and also recorded the weight I was using so I can try to improve on it!

Hello Again!

Hi!!

Yes its been awhile, but if you have a look you will see things have changed!! I have fully moved the blog from Squarespace over to a self hosting platform. Back to wordpress! Yay! There is a new theme, colors and a few more things coming! A slow work in progress!

Anyways, I have lots of fun stuff planned, a few reviews, workouts, and some kiddie updates!

The blog name is staying the same because I feel like I am running through life, even if I am not currently actually running. More on this later, but sometimes I do wish life would slow down!!

Move It Monday

I like to Move it, Move it! 

We got Hannah the Madagascar Movie this weekend with some easter money and she LOVES it! She watched it I think 1.5 times today! 

Recap: Well we did pretty well last week and had more food that needed, but on the whole I probably splurged too much with sweets and all. I also had a checkup last week and I get to be in my boot for 3 more weeks.. FUN. NOT. 

Workouts:

  • Chest/tri/shoulder
  • swimming – I got a speedo this weekend! 
  • Legs on the machines

Meals this week:

  • Monday: Leftover chicken fingers and potato fries
  • Tuesday: Quiche
  • Wednesday: Burgers & baby potatoes
  • Thursday: Kebabs and veggies
  • Friday: Chicken sausage & green beans

Down 1.3 pounds again!  

My whole30 – almost!

So First off, I am attempted a whole30 with a few modifications. I’ll explain more. I kind of decided last minute and jumped in real quick. As in did some research for a few days and then just started!

I started on February 18th ‘officially’ I guess you would say.
Background – My second pregnancy was hard. I carried Teddy much higher and it really affected my body. It affected what and how much I could eat significantly. So much that I even got gall bladder scans because they thought I maybe had stone or an issue. I was GBS positive, so in the hospital I had antibiotics. A lot of them since I was there for about 24 hours before T was born.  After the delivery and I started to get back to normal I noticed I was having a lot of digestive issues. I did some research and asked around to some friends and my good friend B, really encouraged just doing a whole30 to see. I pretty much figured why not? Also, we have had issues with Teddy being pretty sensitive to dairy and some constipation, so the hope is that this helps him too!
The modified part: I am nursing – I have a 3 month old baby. Yes I know you can do whole30 while nursing and all that jazz. My ‘modification’ is that I’m not stressing some of the small details. Such as – I know the ketchup we have has sugar in it. I’m not tossing it (brand new) – I’m just using as little as possible and very sparingly. Same with BBQ sauce. Same with Bacon( which why is there sugar?!) but not all our stores have sugar free bacon and with 2 littles I can’t trapeze all over the city to find it! I also had a lot of snacks- nuts raisins and Larabars. I know the type of person I am and stressing over a few extra small details is not good for me. I am also continuing to use my BCAAs as I don’t really drink coffee and they have a tiny bit of sweetener. You can hate on me all you want, because it’s not 100%. I’m trying for 100% but in reality I know that I’ll hit 98% and that’s OK with me!
The first few days were not bad. I definitely had a huge sugar withdrawal headache! I had prepped pretty well food and snacks and wasn’t too hungry. I made a meal plan and did costco and trader joes and sprouts shopping. It was funny the night hubby saw me eating a burger in lettuce. I didn’t really tell him much and just sprung it on him as well. He pretty much eats what I set out and I know what he likes in general. My friend B has been an awesome text support friend! She has suggested meals and altering my food here and there.
After the first week, my women’s bible study group started a challenge for a month of no grains or sugar. I’m doing no dairy and being a lot more strict, but its wonderful to have the support! We have shared a lot of recipes and stuff so far!
I’ll recap my food up to this point –
Breakfast :

Roasted sweet potatoes, 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon. Also I usually eat a banana and spoonful of almond butter. And a lot of water!
Lunch:
Usually I have some chicken with guacamole, tomatoes, olives, maybe some green soup. Then either just mixed berries or some berries in coconut yogurt.

Dinner:
Varies. We have done simple chicken sausage and zoodles, burgers, grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, more eggs and hash browns. Then we have done more complicated chicken and meatloaf.

So how am I feeling? Well the first two weeks or so were and adjustment on the system. It was up and down. I am feeling a lot better these days. I feel clearer and have more energy – as much as I can get when you still are up in the night! The next 2 weeks were kind of like cruising. It got a little boring but I hung in there. The 5th week was probably the hardest because I was bored with food and didn’t meal prep as much.
As for my digestive issues. I feel a lot better and have had fewer issues. I’m still having a few things here and there but they mostly happened when I cheated. I am also taking some probiotics and hopefully they are helping. I have learned I am pretty sensitive to foods cooked in a lot of oil.
Teddy is doing well with no dairy. I accidentally had something with dairy in it and it was pretty clear it didn’t sit well with him! He had a lot of gas and constipation.
I mentioned this above but I did have a few cheats. I had a couple cupcakes and we ate Thai food I think twice. Once was when I broke my toe and couldn’t cook. I enjoyed my treats but they did affect me. I didn’t feel great the next day and ended up with some uncomfortable gas. So In reality this wasn’t a REAL whole30. I feel like I came close. Maybe in a few months I’ll try for more, but for the time being I’m more than ok with the changes I made.
I know it’s not the main point or even a goal of whole30 but weight loss can happen. Over the 5 weeks I lost 7 pounds. I didn’t measure but I can now fit into the next size down of pants I couldn’t fit into before.
What’s next? Well I think since its working and I feel pretty well I’m going to keep up for the most part. I may try to reintroduce a few items such as peanut butter and see. The ladies in our church group want to continue the paleo challenge as well so I’m keeping accountable with them! I love having others on the journey with me!
